Pic Installation Process
The first stage of the installation of pattern imprinted paving is the excavation and removal of all of the existing material in the chosen area. Typically, Approachways digs down a minimum of 200mm using a combination of machinary and manual labour. At this point any changes to the shape, size and levels of the area can be carried out. Any drainage issues can also be attended to along with replacement of manholes, gulleys, steps etc.
All spoil and waste will be carefully stockpiled until being removed by grab lorry .
A minimum of 100mm of MOT Type1 roadstone is then installed in one of our new pattern imprinted driveways before being thoroughly levelled and then compacted.
Shuttering or formwork is then carefully installed to create the new shape of the imprinted concrete driveway.
The concrete itself is delivered to the site by lorry. It is a mix specifically designed for imprinted paving (see FAQ's).
The concrete is placed initially to a minimum depth of 100mm before being carefully screeded and levelled to form the correct drainage falls on the new driveway or patio. Special bull floats are then used to completely smooth of the surface of the concrete.
At this point, the colour surface hardener can be applied by hand to the new slab. it is this material that creates the tough, coloured skin on top of the imprinted concrete.
After enough time has elapsed for the concrete to start firming up, a release agent is thrown by hand onto the concrete. This has two functions. The first is to enable a two tone colour effect to be created on the pattern imprinted paving. Secondly and more importantly, it enables the installers to imprint the pattern into the soft concrete using large, interlocking rubber mats without them sticking to the surface of the concrete.
Once imprinted, the new area is left for twenty four hours before being powerwashed to remove all excess materials from the sufrace of the imprinted paving. At this point, crack control joints are also cut into the slab using diamond blade cutters.
Once dry, the whole area is then sealed using high solids acrylic sealer to protect it from staining and fading.
Most domestic installations are carried out in a working week depending on the weather of course! Preperation is normally carried out in one to two days and the remaining stages (concrete, clean off and seal) taking a day apiece. Our surveyor will be able to give an accurate appraisal of installation time of your new pattern imprinted driveway or patio when initially visiting you.
